Committee Reports:

FAC- VP Staley introduced two student groups and the Senate approved Theatre Performance and Reformed University Fellowship by acclamation for the full 600$.

President Cook:
He introduced the Web Innovation Group for a presentation about the online suggestion box. He also announced that all Georgia Southern e-mail will be changing to a gmail account and hopefully by the fall 2009.
Senator Singleton gave a report on a focus group through the public relations department. They asked, ‘how can we get undergraduates to give money to Georgia Southern’. They also asked if students knew where they could give money and they were curious about the reasons about what would make students want to give money. They also said that our student fees are rising to almost the same price as our tuition. However students are struggling especially in this struggling economy. They are thinking of creating a program that educates students about giving back to the university so students can begin giving back to the university before they graduate. Senator Singleton felt like the university should get creative and find other ways to make money that going straight to the students.

VP Anjorin:

People must RSVP by April 8, by 5:00. Please included if you are bringing guests and dietary restrictions. Banquet committee will be meeting tomorrow in the SAC at 5:00. VP Anjorin also addressed concerns about voting issues. He also announced that the results from the SGA Elections will be posted outside the SAC12 hours after the elections closes. He also said that there is a very real possibility that there will be run-off elections and those will take place next week. Dean Lewis announced that 1,600 student have voted, and that the most votes in the past has been 2,000.

There was a Presentation by the Web Innovation Group on the online process on the SGA Suggestion Box. On my.georgiasouthern there will be a link on wings that will go directly to an online suggestion box. Student will have the option to remain anonymous. The e-mail will be sent to a general e-mail classified for each college that the chair, the executive assistant and Dean Lewis will have access too.





VP Academic Affairs:

VP Gaston continued with Pass the Hat. He also announced that SGA made 150$ for United Way. VP Gaston also mentioned that he will take all Pass the Hat change to his own bank because he is not charged a surcharge. He also apologizes for being deathly ill last week. He then recognized that John F. Nolan scholarships recipients, Jessica Spaleta, Yasmine Enmon, Jessica Sparrow, Paul Tenzel, and Marie Lumpkin. He also commended the recipients on their hard work and achievement.

VP Finance

VP Staley announced ABC committee members be prepared for an e-mail.

VP Auxiliary Affairs

VP Young reaffirmed that morning practices are all cancelled. Housing appeals have begun and all freshmen are required to live on campus unless you are 21 years of age by spring commencement, if you have more than 30 hours, if you are married, have children, or if you are residing with parents in the five surrounding counties. Those requirements exempt students from living on campus. Also if you do not go through the appeals process students will be paying for university housing and meal plan.

Old Business:

There was a second reading of the Executive Committee Resolution. VP Young felt that 12 members was still too large of a committee. Senator Feagain said that he will change the wording so that all Senators will be able to serve on the committee. VP Staley believes that resolutions should just come to the executive board. There were many different opinions expressed within Senate. Senator Swofford felt like resolutions should just go before the Executive Board.

New Business:

Dean Lewis encouraged everyone to vote!
Senator Feagain gave an update on Class Advisement and the University Judicial Board.
Senator Swofford announced that ‘Res Week’ is coming up!



Senator Howard asked if we could e-mail the newly elected Senators in COBA and CIT to meet for a transition meeting. Friday April 10th at 2:00 in Room 3302 in the IT building.
Senator Singleton announced worship experience on April 19th in the PAC.
April 17th is the transition meeting for VP of Academic Affairs.

March 25,2009

Absences: Briley Coleman, Jenn Stewart, Aaron Wilson, Sarah Crowley, Karen Nowling, Cory Trottie, Rebecca Paulk Christine Gratham, Justin Little, Chris Brown, John Nwosu.

Meeting began at 6:43

The agenda was amended to included guest speaker Jana MacDonald from student employment. Ms. MacDonald spoke to the Senate about student employment opportunities at Georgia Southern. The new process has only one application for any on campus jobs which allows students to build a resumé throughout your career at Southern. The process also allows you to check on the status of your application at any time. The maximum limit for working on campus is 2 jobs and 25 hours. There will also be specific classes offered for student employees. She gave three helpful hints: complete the entire application, have a strong resumé, and be patient and start early.

Committee Reports

FAC:
The Senate approved Habitat for Humanity for 310$ by acclamation.
The Senate approved the African Union for 400$ by acclamation for a fashion show.

President Cook:
There was a guest speaker from ShuttleGus. The director of ShuttleGus expressed the need for more volunteers and said that ShuttleGus meets behind the Varsity apartments from 9:30-2:30 and not everyone needs to be 21. VP Gaston asked the director if he could come speak to the House on April 7th at 5:00. He also announced that ShuttleGus has offered 273 rides this semester.
President Cook also reminded the Senate about Scooper Night and he asked for volunteers for a university focus group about donating money to Georgia Southern.

Executive VP:
Exec VP Anjorin announced the Banquet April 15th at 6:30 in the Ballroom and he asked if anyone needed any veggie meals. The Banquet Committee will meet next week on Thursday April 2 at 5:30.

VP Academic Affairs:
VP Gaston announced Scooper Night on March 31st from 5:00-8:00. They will be handing out flyers on Monday and Senator Howard suggested putting an ad in the Georga-Anne. Senator Feagain gave an update on the Senate merger of all two year technical colleges with which they created a Senate Committee devoted to examining the issue.
President Cook then entertained a motion to strike everything from part VIII down due to the upending debate.

VP Finance:
VP Staley announced that ABC is cancelled on Friday and individual fund request will be going out soon!

VP Auxiliary Affairs:
VP Young announced that in faculty Senate they discussed the budget crises which will create larger and more classes for temporary faculty however it is expected that faculty Senate will unanimously strike it down. VP Young reminded the Senate that it will be required for freshmen to live on campus and the appeals process is beginning now.
The issue of athletic practice times was discussed when Dr. Heaston met with President Grube and President Grube met with Sam Baker. It was then mandated that all practice times will return to afternoons and student athletes will be re-advised.

Old Business:
The 3rd and final reading of the Constitutional Amendment Resolution and it was passed by acclamation.

New Business:
The first reading of the Senate Executive Committee took place. VP Young felt like 12 members is too large and it should be an open committee to all members not just college chairs. Some Senators felt like it was “just another way of taking the power out of the Senates hands”,

FAC Report:
The Society of Women Engineers was approved by acclamation for 600$ to attend a regional conference.
The African American Writers Guild was approved by acclamation for 600$.
The Express Lane: A place to Express Your Voice was approved for 600$. Yay: 27; Nay 5

VP Anjorin:
In this election there is 109 people running and that is the most in SGA history. The Executive board and presidential debate will immediately follow the Senate meeting on March 25th. The radio station cannot record or broadcast the debate because of previous planned shows. Elections will take place March 29th- 31st. Executive board candidate running will be contacted by the end of the week.

VP Academic: No Report.

VP Finance:
There is plenty of money left in FAC for the remainder of the semester for student organizations!

VP Auxiliary Affairs:
There are reported break-ins in Eagle Village so please be aware of your surroundings and lock your doors. Other break-ins have occurred in Cambridge and University Villas. Dr. Moore updated the Senate on the athletic practice time issue. He said that Dr. Bliken was unaware of the seriousness of the issue and Dr. Moore believes that once this issue is brought to all their attention that practice times will be changed. He also mentioned the idea of professors being unable to make mandatory graduating classes in the morning. The Senate felt like there needs to be more student athlete feedback and Senator Nwosu felt that we should focus on all aspects of this issue both academic and athletic.

New Business: Seeing None.

Old Business: Constitutional Amendment Resolution, there was a vote to strike the line “whereas the relevance is questioned”. There will be a third reading next week.

Senator Jones-Lawrence gave the FAC Report
A. Senate approved by acclamation the GSU Adrenaline Show Choir for 600$ to put on a choir show.
B. Senate approved the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society for 600$ by Yay:37; Nay: 2 to send one of their exec board members to a National conference.
C. Senate approved by acclamation GSU Stand for 600$ to attend a chapter retreat in North Carolina.
D. Senate approved the National Black Law Student Association for 600$ by Yay 38; Nay: 2
E. Senate approved by acclamation the Graphics and Printing Association for 600$ to attend a conference.
F. Senate approved by acclamation the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for 600$ to help pay for lodging to attend a conference.

President Cook: No report.

VP Anjorin:

A. Election Committee will meet Monday and election application are due this Friday.
B. The Election Debate will be March 24 from 7:00-9:00 in room 2047.
1. Many Senators felt the room would not be big enough to accommodate the audience. Suggestions were mentioned for reserving the ballroom or theatre or the IT room or moving it to Wednesday because SGA already has the theatre reserved. Senator Howard suggested having the debate recorded and broadcasted over the campus radio.
C. Asked is anyone was interesting in Wellness Ambassador.
D. April 15 is the SGA Banquet
E. TBA next week: if you are running for an Executive Board position you must meet with Dean Lewis.

VP Gaston:
A. Keep bringing change for Pass the Hat
B. Scholarship Update
1. Scholarship recipients were chosen, 19 applied and 6 were chosen. Everyone was e-mailed today as of 5:00.
C. United Way Committee meet immediately after Senate for a brief meeting.
D. Scoop Night is March 31st from 4:30-9:00. There must be around 4 people present at all times and everyone must attend.

VP Staley:

A. ABC Committee: All members must be there at 2:00 in the RU. Last meeting is March 27th in Rosenwald building.

VP Young:

A. During elections we want to recruit to SGA so always have a positive attitude about SGA and answer questions and try to wear your SGA Polo every Wednesday.
B. Parking and Transportation Committee Student Forum 6:30 Monday March 9th
C. Students: you will be ticketed if you park in the gated area behind the library and the Master Plan is for that space to be more ‘Green Space’
1. Senator Allen felt that the area behind the library was dangerous due to the lack of lighting.
D. Athletics: Dr. Moore brought up the issue of sports teams practicing in the morning which limits their options for degrees and majors. For football, they typically practice from 8-12 which means they can’t begin class until 1:00 which means they cannot major in education, business (except management) or any health related majors. A majority of athletes are general studies. More sports want to practice in the morning, however the Senators felt that athletes’ opinions should be considered in the practice times.

A. Attention all Senators please pick up ShuttleGus supplies in his office
B. He is planning to put adds in the George-Anne about Senate
C. It was mentioned for Senators to put the SGA emblem as their facebook default picture for advertisement.

Old Business: Seeing none.

New Business:

A. Constitutional Amendment proposed by the Senators Malcom and Marcus Howard.
1. The amendment defined the role of the College Chairs within the House of Representatives. Which included responsibilities like meeting the administration of the college once a semester and all the College Chairs must all meet once a month.
2. Senator Little felt that the House must be better defined before Senate begins explaining the duties of the College Chairs within the House.
3. VP Young felt that the Howard Senators should meet with the Exec Board to make the wordage more positive.
4. Senator Howard said that he is going to change “must meet with administration” to “attempt to meet with the administration”.
5. Senators were worried that this would limit the power of the College Chairs.

Pass the Gavel

A. Senator Feagain explained that the Class Representatives in the House were going before the Class advisory board to achieve peer advising. And peer advisors will have to go through a training process.
B. Dr. Moore said that he had a meeting with President Grube and students should expect to have larger classes and fewer faculty.
C. SGA needs people to volunteer at a meet and greet from 7:45am-9:00am Saturday morning
